Welcome back to Canada’s Dockside Theatre!
On behalf of the entire Playhouse team, we are grateful to have
you here with us for our 41
st
season of theatre on the banks of
the St. Lawrence River.
Last season was ambitious in many ways, and I rst want to
thank our loyal audiences who rejoined us and celebrated
that strong return. I’ve had people ask me about what comes next for the
Playhouse. My simple response is: more. My goal is to continually build, netune,
and evolve this wonderful organization, starting with the productions that you’ll
be seeing on stage this season. This year we celebrate our incredible Production
Department who are both the brains and the brawn behind what you see in front
of you every time you enter the theatre. From the intricate design of the moors
of Baskerville, to the sprawling hills of The Sound of Music, the delicate fabrics
and embroidery of Intimate Apparel, and the cozy streets of Dublin in Once, their
artistry will transport you to a new world every time you sit down in the theatre.
I’m delighted to welcome you to our waterfront home this season and I hope
that the positive atmosphere that we aim to provide will ll you with optimism
and joy. Be sure to take that with you into the community when you’re stopping
in for a meal before or after the show, or simply chatting with friends about your
Playhouse experience.
Looking forward to seeing you at the theatre,
Brett Christopher
Letter from the Managing Artistic Director
The Thousand Islands Playhouse creates
our work on the traditional land of the
Anishinaabeg Nation and Haudenosaunee
Confederacy. We recognize the Indigenous
peoples of this land who are its original
caretakers and storytellers, both here and
across Turtle Island. As an organization
whose primary purpose is to tell stories, we
are committed to ensuring that the voices
and stories of Indigenous peoples continue
to be heard. Miigwetch, nya:weh, merci and
thank you to the people on whose traditional
territory we are able to live, work, and thrive.

Letter from MPP Steve Clark
Welcome to the Playhouse and to the great region of
the Thousand Islands, Leeds, Grenville and Rideau
Lakes. Whether you’re visiting from afar, or staying at
home in this beautiful community, your presence with
us is celebrated.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work in this wonderful
place since my early years as the Mayor of Brockville
and during my time as the MPP, and I’m constantly reminded of how
special this area of Ontario truly is. The Playhouse and the surrounding
businesses highlight the natural beauty of this region and make the
Thousand Islands a great place to relax, enjoy a show, and play. Congrat-
ulations to the entire team at the Thousand Islands Playhouse for their
continued efforts to drive community connection, cultural literacy and
healthy tourism to this region.
On behalf of the Provincial Government, welcome to the neighbourhood
and let the play begin!

community of Gananoque!
This vibrant community boasts exceptional attractions
and businesses like the Thousand Islands Playhouse
and the extraordinary people behind the scenes that

We are reminded daily of the beauty and history of this region as the mighty
St. Lawrence River runs alongside us, through the surrounding islands that
tourists from all across Canada and from around the world come to see.
The Playhouse offers theatre with a spectacular view that makes it a truly
unique experience. Congratulations to everyone at the Thousand Islands
Playhouse on another successful performing season.

Director’s Note
It’s been a long time coming... this show, this production, this group of people.
I started working on Once in late 2019, for a production in September of 2020.
We all know how that year went, so I have endless gratitude to Brett for bringing
back the team – we’re nally getting to see the vision realized. And I couldn’t be
more excited.
Once is a beautiful moment in time; a show that takes place over the course
of ve days, and in just ve days, two souls, destined to meet, have such a
profound impact on each other that their lives change forever. Held together
by their love of music, the community of people that we meet deeply affect one
another. I hope you discover the poetry and magic that Once has to offer.
I have so many people to thank. Thank you to my closest collaborators, Lyndsey,
Chris, and Dustyn, for keeping me organized and laughing. Thank you to all the
designers, Joe, Ming, Michelle, and Brian, your work is beautiful. Thank you to the
rest of the team, to the staff at TIP, and to Brett, for making it all happen. Thank
you to this cast, for memorizing THE WHOLE SCORE, and for being open, willing,
and joyful. Finally, thank you to you, the audience, for being here and supporting
live theatre.

As long as there have been movies, there have
been musical stage adaptations of those movies.
Even before the invention of lm, adaptations of literature into operas and ballets
was common, with some adaptations becoming more well known than the original
media. One of the most famous ballets of all time, The Nutcracker, is based on the
novel The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which most people have never read.
Musical adaptations of movies can be seen as a “safe bet” for producers for a
few reasons. Adapting an existing story can guarantee that a production will
have an audience that musicals with an original story might not have. Adapting
can also provide a framework for writers, producers, designers, choreographers,
and composers, keeping everyone on the same page. As the librettist Alan Jay
Lerner says in his forward to the published libretto of Paint Your Wagon,
...start o on the right foot and select a story that is all prepared for
you. The translation of that story to musical form is quite complex
enough. Within that frame you will find more than adequate challenge
to your originality and enough on which to experiment.
1
Some well known movies that were adapted as musicals for the stage include
Elf, The Producers, 9 to 5, Billy Elliot and Sister Act. Some movies adapted into
stage musicals are then re-adapted into movies, called “recursive adaptation”.
For example, Matilda the novel was adapted into a movie, then adapted into
20
Upon a Time...in
21
a stage musical, which
was then adapted back
into a movie. The pattern
can be confusing, but
when an audience loves
a story, there is economic
incentive to create as many
adaptations of that story as
possible.
Once (the musical) is
based on the 2007 movie
of the same name. Unlike
many musicals based on
movies, most of the plot
and musical numbers
from the movie remain
intact. The movie, lmed in
Ireland with an extremely
small budget, was an indie
darling of 2007, and won
“Best Original Song” at
the 2008 Academy Awards
for “Falling Slowly”. Once
the musical opened on
Broadway in 2012 and kept
much of the lo- charm
that made so many fall in
love with the movie. With
all the music played live
on stage by actors/musicians, the musical was the
hit of the 2012 Broadway season, and won eight Tony
Awards, including Best Musical.
Stage adaptations are only as good as their source
material. Once the musical pulls from an authentic
and heartfelt movie with songs that connect with the
audience. As the critic Peter Brown described, “...what
makes this musical really special and puts it in a
different league to other offerings is the captivating,
magical quality of the songs. Almost from the rst
note, you realize you are listening to music that is
extraordinarily distinctive, powerfully emotional and
hugely affecting – in a word... stunning.”
